Your printer cannot auto answer an incoming fax if:
- The printer is not set up for auto answer. Press the Auto Answer button on the printer control panel. The LED light will be illuminated to indicate the printer is set up for auto answer.
- Your printer is not connected properly for faxing.
- The remote voice messaging service is enabled on the same phone line. See .
- The Distinctive Ring setting is not set properly.
If you have the Distinctive Ring service set up for faxing, set the Distinctive Ring accordingly:
- On the printer control panel, press Home.
- Select Fax Settings.
- Select Distinctive Rings.
- Use the left or right arrow buttons to select a ring setting.
- Press OK.
NOTE: Typically when you have this service, you will have two numbers, one for regular phone and one for fax. If you are not sure if you have the Distinctive Ring Service, contact your phone service provider, or try the following steps:
- Use a cell phone to call both numbers and listen to the ring tone.
- If the ring tone from the fax number is different from the regular phone number, you have the Distinctive Ring service. Follow the steps above to set your Distinctive Ring to the ring tone you hear when you call the fax number.
If you do not have the Distinctive Ring service set up for faxing, set the Distinctive Ring to Any Ring (no distinctive ring).
- On the printer control panel, press Home.
- Select Fax Settings.
- Select Distinctive Rings.
- Use the left or right arrow buttons to select Any Ring.
- Press OK.
