The following messages could appear on the printer LCD when a fax fails to send:
- "No carrier"
- "Unable to connect. Line busy."
To resolve the error:
- Make sure that the Country/Region setting on your printer matches your location. The setting determines how your faxes are sent and received. To set the correct Country/Region:
- From the printer control panel, press Home.
- Select Printer Settings, then press OK.
- Select Country/Region, then press OK.
- Select your country or region, then press OK.
- Make sure that you dial the proper sequence of digits. For example, if you are on a Private Business Exchange, you may need to dial 9 or 0 before the actual phone number. For long distance dialing, you may need to dial 1 before the area code. In general, dial the number as you would to make a regular phone call.
- Verify the dialing mode. In most cases it should be set to TONE dialing, but there could be areas in the country where tone dialing doesn't work. In these rare cases, set it to PULSE dialing.
- From the printer control panel, press Home.
- Select Fax Settings, then press OK.
- Scroll down to Dialing Mode, use the left and right buttons to select Pulse, then press OK.
Busy signal and dial tone problems:
- If you continue to get a busy signal when sending a fax, the Disable Call Waiting may not be set up properly.
If you send a fax with the resolution set to PHOTO, the error message "Unable to connect. Line busy." may appear.
This error occurs because the fax machine you are sending to is not capable of handling a color or grayscale fax. To resolve the error:
- From the printer control panel, press Home.
- Select Send Fax, the press OK.
- Select Fax Options, then press OK.
- Select Resolution, then press OK.
- Change the resolution to Fine or Standard.
- Send the fax again.
If you are using VoIP to send a fax, see .
If the problem continues:
- Reduce the fax speed (if your printer has this feature):
- From the printer control panel, press Home.
- Select Fax Settings, then press OK.
- Select Fax Speed, then press the left or right arror buttons to change to a lower speed (such as Slow or Medium).
- Press OK to save the change.
- Send the fax again.
- If the problem still continues, verify that your phone line is working properly.
- Remove the LINE IN connector and attach it to a headset.
- Using the headset, dial the same problematic fax number while listening.
- If the phone connection is established correctly, you should hear the remote fax machine pick up and send an answer tone. If not, there is something wrong with the number. Contact your phone service provider or the receiver for assistance.
