If your printer has wireless (Wi-Fi) capability:
Other users on your network can access the printer when it is connected to the network.

If your printer does not have wireless capability:
You can share the printer so that other network users can access it.

Prerequisites:

  • The printer should be installed on a WINDOWS XP host computer.
  • The host computer should be connected to a local area network.

To share a printer over a network using WINDOWS XP OS:

  1. From the host computer, select Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes.
  2. Click the printer you want to share.
  3. Select Printer > Sharing.
  4. Select Share this printer. Enter a descriptive name for the printer in the "Share name" field.
NOTE: The share name is the identifier that is displayed to other devices when they are connected to the local network.
  5. Click OK. The printer is now accessible to other devices on your local network.
NOTE: To test whether the sharing is properly configured, access it from a different computer on the local network. Navigate to Printers and Faxes. Select Printer > Add a printer. The share name that you provided in Step 5 identifies this printer on the local area network.

To access the printer from another computer on the local area network:

  1. Select Start > Run.
  2. In the Run window, type \\ followed by the name of the computer that is physically connected to the printer (for example \\HomeComputer).
  3. Click OK.
  4. Double-click the printer that you want to install.
If the printer queue is displayed, the printer has been installed.

NOTE: For other devices to access the shared printer, the host computer must be powered on and connected to the local area network.
