The printer contacts do not connect with the printhead contacts. The contacts may be dirty; the best way to clean the contacts is by reseating the printhead multiple times. 

To resolve the error condition:

  1. Remove the ink cartridges.
    1. Open the printer access door by lifting from the front center of the unit. If the print carriage on an ESP 3 printer does not move to the ink cartridge access position, see
    2. When the printhead is idle and silent, pinch the latch on the color ink cartridge with your thumb and forefinger, and lift it out of the printhead.
    3. Repeat step b for the black ink cartridge.
  2. Lift the printhead release latch. You do not need to remove the printhead from the printer.
  3. Reseat the printhead, pushing firmly on the white label on the printhead (if provided) or the center of the printhead, until it clicks into place.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3.
  5. After the printhead has been reseated two times, re-insert the ink cartridges into the printhead, making sure that the cartridges snap into place.
  6. Close the printer access door and verify that the error is corrected.
