The Secure Digital (SD) memory card has a write-protect switch on the card case. Like the write-protect switch on a floppy disk, the SD switch prevents the card from being written to.
Moving the write-protect switch lets you write to and format the SD card. If you are looking at the front of the card, the switch is on the upper-left side.
